Historically, the opportunity to acquire education In most societies in India had been limited to a few, mainly to those from the upper strata. The privileged were able to utilize their education in reaping all the benefits which accrued to their educational status. The outcastes (who are called ‘Dalits’ today) were practically excluded from all privileges and resources, though they were included in the Hindu society.
A welfare state has the obligation to bring equality and prosperity to all its citizens and establish social justice. Therefore it is necessary that Basic Education is available universally to all of India’s children. Several programs were initiated to strengthen the education system. Special measures were taken to educate the lower castes, Dalits, Tribals and women. Dalits, Backward Castes and Tribals were awarded reservations in educational institutions and in government jobs as well. However, the status of education among Dalits and Tribals is worse than the national average.
What are the reasons for such high dropout rates from school? Don’t educational institutions provide enough facilities to Dalits? Do teachers treat them differently?
