Agrarian Unrest in the Central Bihar Plain
The author received his Ph.D. degree in year 1992. This book is an outcome of the research done for his thesis. The book has wide canvas, detailing the social, economic and political aspects of agrarian life in the central Bihar plain from colonial period to 1990. It illustrates the agriculture system of an unprogressive society and the concomitant social and political upheavals, transformation in political landscape and rivalry between privileged class and marginalised communities every wake of life. The volume attempts to capture this struggle of disadvantaged classes to metamorphose the stagnant and exploitative agriculture economy To usher in an equitable. democratic society and thought structure
The importance of the book underlined by the epoch transforming events of early 1990’s, impacting political economy of the country as never before, which has been sufficiently explicated by the volume.
The present book is published after 30 years of the submission of Ph.D. Therefore, questions may be raised about its contemporary relevance, but I humbly propose that the volume should be considered as a historical document, delineating the influence of geographical-ecological approaches on the extraordinary movements unfolding during the period.
A number of people and organisations had their share of help in shaping and bringing out this thesis and finally the book. First of all, I want to offer my sincere to gratitude to Ph.D guide Professor Sudepta Adhikari, whose scholastic guidance was most significant for this thesis in order to see the light of day. Equally important in this exercise were my late parents (Sri Rajnath Singh & Smt. Malti Devi), who endured my ups and downs in this academic endeavor ! also want to thank my teachers at Patna University’s departments of Geography, History, Economics and Sociology for their constant encouragement to accomplish this project.
