वैशाली गणतंत्र की जन्मस्थली मानी जाती है। विश्व का प्राचीनतम गणतंत्र वैशाली में ही था। यहाँ गणतंत्र की स्थापना (करीब 725 ई०पू० ) यूनान में गणतंत्र के प्रादुर्भाव से पूर्व हो चुकी थी। ऐसे महत्त्वपूर्ण विषय पर लिखित यह सबसे प्रामाणिक पुस्तक है।
इस पुस्तक में वैशाली का इतिहास आदि काल से प्रस्तुत किया गया है। यहाँ गणतंत्र की स्थापना से पूर्व राजतात्रिक व्यवस्था थी। इस व्यवस्था का सिलसिलेवार इतिहास इस पुस्तक में दिया गया है। गणतंत्र की स्थापना की कालगणना विशुद्ध वैज्ञानिक तरीके से की गयी है। इस पुस्तक में स्थापित तिथि की पुष्टि वहाँ की खुदाइयों से भी हुई है।
जैनों के चौबीसवें तीर्थंकर भगवान महावीर की जन्मभूमि भी वैशाली में थी। महावीर का काल निर्धारण भी वैज्ञानिक आधार पर किया गया है। वैशाली गौतमबुद्ध को प्रियस्थली थी। गौतमबुद्ध और महावीर समकालीन थे। इन दोनों संतों की मुलाकात कभी हुई भी अथवा नहीं? इस गुत्थी को बहुत ही रोचक ढंग से यहाँ सुलझाया गया है। कुल मिलाकर इस पुस्तक में वैशाली का राजनीतिक, सामाजिक सांस्कृतिक इतिहास विस्तार से है।
