Scholastic Classics: Secret Garden Ne Pb
Frances Hodgson Burnett, the oldest daughter of an immigrant family that arrived in America in 1865 following the death of her father, was born in Manchester in 1849. Frances was a storyteller from her childhood and began writing professionally after the family’s fortunes declined in post-Civil-War Tennessee. Her novel That Lass O’ Lowries (1876-7) was her first success. She then consolidated the story with several other popular novels and plays. Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), was her most successful work, but her classics for children, A Little Princess (1905) & The Secret Garden (1911) are what she is most remembered. Mrs Hodgson-Burnett’s private life was marred by two unhappy marriages. However, she became an American citizen in 1906 and settled on Long Island until her death in 1924.
