Lord of the Flies
William Golding (1911-1993) was born in Cornwall. He attended Marlborough Grammar School, Oxford and Brasenose college, Oxford. Before becoming a writer he was an actor and small-boat sailor. He also played the piano, was a musician, and was a schoolteacher. He joined the Royal Navy in 1940 and participated in the liberation of Holland and the D-Day operation. Lord of the Flies was his first novel. Although it was rejected by many publishers, Faber saved it from the “reject pile” and published it in 1954. It was a modern classic that sold millions of copies. It was translated into 44 languages, and made into a movie by Peter Brook in 1963. Golding also wrote 11 novels, a play, and two essay collections. In 1980, he was awarded the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage and in 1983 the Nobel Prize in Literature.
