Xiaolu Guo was a south Chinese citizen. After studying at the Beijing Film Academy, Guo published six books in China. She moved to London in 2002. Village of Stone was one of her shortlisted books. A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers was also shortlisted for this prize. 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth was longlisted for Man Asian Literary Prize. I Am China was also longlisted for Women’s Prize for Fiction. Once Upon a Time in the East was her most recent memoir. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. She was also shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award and the Jhalak Prize. The Rathbones Folio Award 2018 was awarded to the book. Xiaolu was a Granta Best of Young British Novelists in 2013. She has directed many award-winning films, including She, A Chinese and documentaries about China, Britain, and other countries. She was a Booker Prize judge in 2019 and is currently a visiting Professor at Columbia University in New York.
