This book is a detailed exposition of Vedanta Dasika’s Satadusani, a controversial polemical classic of Visistadvaita Vedanta. It is devoted to criticism of Advaita Vedanta doctrines. The thought-provoking arguments found in the Sixty-six Vedas of the original text are brought together, analysed and discussed in a systematic manner under eight broad headings: Pramanas Perception; Consciousness; Individual self; Brahman; Universe; Avidya; Sadhana and Mukti. In presenting the dialectics of Vedanta Desika in a vigorous and scholastic form the author deals with numerous issues that the Vadas raise–epistemological, ontological, religious, and ethical. Although the topics are numerous and each one addresses a particular problem, they all ultimately aim to discredit Advaita’s central doctrine, namely that Brahman, pure consciousness without any determinations, is the only Reality and everything else is illusionary. He carefully examines the fundamental differences between Vedanta’s two systems and points out that they are mostly due in part to differences in their stand-points. This work can be used as an introduction to Ramanuja’s Sribhasya of Ramanuja. This book is a valuable contribution to the study and understanding of classical Hindu thought. It should be of great interest to Vedanta students, and all those studying Philosophy.
