Agni documents authentic rituals, and points out new approaches to understanding Vedas. J.C. Heesterman and Kern are grateful to Staal…for a work that is beyond beauty and intelligence. — David Knipe, JAS 1986
The first volume of Agni is The Vedic Ritual of the Fire Altar. It discusses the role of the Agnicayana within the Vedic srauta traditions, its textual loci and traditional and modern interpretations of their origins and importance. The bulk of this volume is devoted to a description of the 19875 12-day performance. Itti Ravi Nambudiri and C.V. Somayajipad worked closely together. Numerous text illustrations, tables, and maps are included. These mantras can be found in Devanagari as well as translation. With the help of Pamela MacFarland the second volume contains contributions from an international group of scholars on archeology and pre-Vedic India background, geometry, ritual vessels music, Mimamsa, survey of Srauta traditions in modern times, the influence Vedic ritual in Homa traditions from Indonesia, Tibet China, Japan, and other related topics. Translations of Baudhayana’s Srauta Sutras and Calanda’s text are included, as is the Jaiminiya with Bhavatrata’s commentary. There’s also a Kausitaki Brahmana as well as a comprehensive survey of the project that includes an inventory of tape recordings and films made in 1975.
