Ian Whicher is Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is the author of The Integrity of the Yoga Darsana – A Reconsideration of Classical Yoga (1998). His current research interests are in the exploration of Indic notions about spiritual liberation, their ethical implications, and the relationship between yoga & Buddhism. Since completing graduate studies in Theology and the History of Religions at the University of Chicago,David Carpenter has taught at St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he is currently Associate Professor of the History of Religions. He is the author of Revelation,History, and the Dialogue of Religions:A Study of Bhartrhari and Bonaventure (1995).His research interests include the history of ancient and medieval Indian religions and the comparative study of spiritual practice.
The book contains five essays, which have been revised from earlier writings. It also includes recent work on Classical Yoga. These essays challenge the prevailing dualistic and isolationistic views of Yoga. I argue that Yoga, as it is classically understood, does not lead to abandonment, condemnation or mere transcendence of embodied life and material existence. Instead of looking at Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutra through the lens of dualistic metaphysical assumptions, which are often derived from classical Samkhya, I chose to read the Yoga-Sutra with a view that values the experience of yoga and not metaphysical abstractions. These essays, based on the classical tradition, explore the ways Yoga can lead to a balanced integration between the spiritual, ethical and material dimensions. This includes a clarity of awareness that combines the integrity of being with action.
