Shyam Ranganathan is a specialist in Indian philosophy, philosophy of language, and theoretical ethics. He has a BA from Guelph and an MA from the University of Toronto in philosophy. He also holds an MA in South Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. He is currently completing his PhD in philosophy at York University. His dissertation, Translating evaluative discourse: the semantics of thick and thin concepts, is based on research in Analytic ethics, philosophy of language, and translation studies. It addresses the problem of translating philosophy and ethics across cultures and languages. He serves as the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s acting area editor for Indian philosophy. He also teaches various philosophy courses including Asian Philosophy. His next book, originally titled The Moral philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga S tra was published by Penguin. He also has published works on translation theory, and philosophy of language.
Shyam Ranganathan’s Ethics and the History of Indian Philosophy presents a convincing, systematic explanation of the moral philosophy content of Indian philosophy history. This contrasts with the Indology and comparative philosophy wisdom that Indian philosophers were not particularly interested in ethics. Ranganathan’s critique is that these arguments are based on an insufficient grasp of the history and philosophy of moral philosophy in Western countries. He also points out that this methodology is not practical. This could have prevented Ranganathan from proving that Western philosophers were interested in ethics, or that “good” can be considered a value term. Ranganathan’s novel positive thesis states that “dharma”, in all its usages in the Indian classical tradition, is a thin term of morality, which is used by authors to express their particular views on ethics or Morality. This book, unlike most other works on the subject, makes the case for ethics in Indian philosophy’s history. It draws upon recent metaethics work and metamorality to provide a thorough analysis of moral concepts and PHILOSOPHY. The author also explains the Indian authors’ texts. Ranganathan’s account shows that Indian philosophy has distinct options in ethics. These options are similar to those found in Western literature, such as the Neo-Platonists or Plato, and not the positivistic or anthropocentric options that have dominated recent Western traditions.
