The history of Indian knowledge in Western culture began around 2500 years ago. Indology’s history started about 230 years ago. It was a result of a combination of colonial interests and scholarly interest, but it was also influenced by the Indian scholarly traditions. Indological chairs were established in many European universities over the next 75 years. This volume includes a brief introduction to South Asian Studies, a bibliography, and six case studies. These include early Indological traditions of Sweden and Denmark, Sanskrit research in Russian cultural history and Sanskrit translations from Sanskrit by the French Indologist Sylvain Levy and Hemaraja Sarma, the scholar from Nepal.
