Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abul Kalam, b. One of India’s most prominent scientists, Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born 15 October 1931. He was responsible for India’s first satellite launch vehicle (SLV-3), the development and operation of strategic missiles, their weaponization, as well as for developing and maintaining an indigenous capability in critical technologies. He was the Chairman of the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council. This council oversees a variety of technology projects and missions that will help India enter the 21st century. Yagnaswami Rajan is an internationally recognized authority on technology development, management, and social linkages. Between 1988 and 2002, he held various positions in science and technology. He has helped to shape key policies and successfully implemented R&D projects that included industry participation. He was responsible to create a number of documents related Technology Vision 2020. After serving a 30-year tenure with the government, he joined Confederation of Indian Industry (CIO) in 1996. He was the principal advisor from 2004 to 2010. He is currently an honorary distinguished professor at ISRO Bangalore. In 2012, he received the Padma Shri.
