The Orthodox Church celebrates Theodore (759-826), the abbot of the influential Constantinopolitan monastery Stoudios. He is known for his staunch defense of icon veneration. The Life and Death Of Theodore Stoudios contains three important texts that promote the monastery and its founder. The Life of Theodore is a collection of Michael the Monk’s descriptions of a golden age in Stoudios and Theodore’s sometimes antagonistic encounters against imperial rulers. His successor wrote the Encyclical Letter to Naukratios in 826 informing scattered monks about their leader’s passing. Translation and Burial includes brief biographies of Theodore’s brother and an eyewitness account about their reburial at Stoudios. These works are translated into English by Theodore and his brother, along with new editions of Byzantine Greek texts.
