This volume traces the evolution of one of the most controversial debates in Buddhist philosophy. Leading parts were taken by Nagarjuna Bhavaviveka, Candrakirti and Candrakirti. The fascinating debate between the Prasangikas, and Svatantrikas has received relatively little attention. The division between the two schools was largely attributed to disagreements over the Madhyamaka philosophical views. The author claims that the school split over philosophy, rather than forensic methodology. In other words, the method by which the philosophy on emptiness was to communicated and defended for others. To support his view, he heavily relies on Tibetan sources. He also makes use of Nagarjuna’s Mulamadhya makakarika and Candrakirti’s Prasannapadanamadhyamakavrtti. This volume not only expands our current understanding of Madhyamaka, but also provides a new and very reasonable interpretation of the nature and divisions between Prasangikas & Svatantrikas.
