This Encyclopedia contains 28 volumes. Its purpose is to provide information on different streams of Indian Philosophical texts and to cite experts on those points that are difficult. There is a Bibliography and a Glossary, and the volumes also cover Nyaya–Vaisesika and Samkhya as well as Yoga, Purva Mimamsa and various Vedanta systems. This volume retells the Nyaya–Vaisesika’s history starting in Volume VI of this Series. It also includes a discussion of Gadadhara (ca. 1660). This is the time of the great subcommentators (Jagadisa Mathuranatha and Gadadhara) on Raghunatha siromani’s Tattvacinta Manididhita. It was the culmination of some the most complex philosophical analysis the world has ever seen. Professor Sibajiban Bhatta Charyya’s extensive Introduction provides a detailed explanation of the style and content these sub-commentators use, as well as a clear account of many main topics covered in these works. The introduction is followed by an analysis of selected chapters from these subcommentaries by some Indian scholars who are able to understand the difficulties they present. These summaries are a good way to get a basic understanding of the topics without having to read the subcommentaries.
