Paratrisika, or Paratrimsika, is a short Tantra that has been highly regarded by Kashmir Saivism and Trika. Abhinavagupta wrote two commentaries about it after Somananda. One was a brief one (Laghuvrti), and one is the present Vivarana. This English translation is the first. Paratrisika Vivarana, one of the most complex and difficult texts in the Kashmir Saiva School as well as the entire mystical philosophical literature of India, is a fascinating text. It discusses the Ultimate Reality (anuttara, para) as well as the methods of realization. The mantra theory and practice are the main focus. Abhinavagupta shows here his extraordinary exegetical genius. He presents a penetrating metaphysics on language, the Word (vak), and its various stages in relationship to consciousness. The mystical experience in this text is reflected in his language in a glowing fashion. This translation of Abhinavagupta’s masterpiece will be a landmark in the study Kashmir Saivism. It also provides a gateway to one of the most important mystical texts in Indian tradition for those interested in philosophy or spirituality.
