POTTY TIME WITH PETE THE KITTY

James Dean was the original creator of Pete the Cat and his illustrator. Born in Fort Payne, Alabama, he is a self-taught illustrator. James’ passion for drawing was evident from a young age. As a child, you could see him drawing his favorite characters, such as Yogi Bear and Snoopy. James graduated from Auburn University with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for Georgia Power for several years. He decided to pursue his passion for art full-time, and started selling his work at Southeast art festivals. He began to draw and paint Pete during this period. James Dean’s art featured the little blue cat as a character around 1999. He has been a constant fixture in James’s work ever since. James Dean’s artwork has been sold in over ninety shops and galleries across the United States. For fifteen years, he has dedicated his art to Pete the Cat and made his passion for cats his profession. James published his first book in 2006, The Misadventures Of Pete the Cat. He also illustrated Pete the Cat: My White Shoes in 2008. James is humbled by the success of this blue cat. He believes that positively impacting children’s lives is his top priority and is thankful to have such a wide audience. Kimberly Dean, a children’s author and artist, is also a yoga enthusiast. She is best known for being a NYT bestseller author and co-parent to the children’s book character Pete The Cat. Before she could fulfill her dream of being a full-time artist and author, she worked in the State of Georgia. She left the Governor’s Press Office to pursue her art. In 1999, she began selling her art at art festivals and in 2003, opened a small gallery. She is open to trying new techniques and styles, and she enjoys working in many mediums. “I love what my job is!” she says. She describes work as going to kindergarten every day! In 2004, she started working with James Dean, a fellow artist, to create children’s books on Pete the Cat. In 2006, James Dean’s coffee table book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat was published. With the publication of Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses, her dream of being a children’s author became a reality. She is the author of many Pete the Cat books and has also started a series featuring her characters, Willow and Oliver. Kimberly lives with her cat Phoebe and her dog Gypsy in Savannah. She lives near her children and grandchildren. Her favorite word is “Lovie,” which her grandchildren affectionally call her.
