This work defends the Tantra of which Sastra is an adherent. It is also a polemic. It is written in the interest of Hindu orthodoxy in Sakta form against secularism, on the one hand, as well as religious eclecticism, reform movements and various other movements. The book is actually a orthodox Catholic protest against modernism in parts. It is interesting because it shows how many fundamental principles are shared by all orthdox belief systems, West and East. The Tantratattva author (on which this translation is based), was a well-known Tantrik Pandit preacher and secretary of Sarvamgalasabha, Benares. He knew little English. Because his work is in Bengali, it can be considered a popular statement of the modern orthodox views. Tattva, a broad term that is not always easy to translate, is very extensive. Although Principles of Tantra is what the author calls the title of his book, it should really be Subjects of Tantra. The book focuses on selected topics in Tantra. However, this also includes a statement about certain fundamental principles that govern Sastrik teachings on the topics covered. This must be the reason for the ambitious title.
