Red Earth and Pouring rain is the story of a monkey who remembers it was a human in its past life. It tells its stories about colonialism in India’s early years, and many other stories. Abhay is furious when the monkey who has been bothering him for years steals his jeans. His parents take the monkey inside and Abhay shoots the monkey. The gods have a discussion about who will keep the monkey’s soul. It is decided that the monkey can only live as long as he can share a story. Soon the monkey begins to recall his past lives. Abhay and his family will find many stories he wrote as a man. Many stories are told about Abhay’s American experience. Vikram Chandra, an Indian-American author. Red Earth and Pouring rain is Vikram Chandra’s first novel. The book won the 1996 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book. Vikram received his degree from Pomona College, Claremont, California. He graduated with a BA degree in English, and he specialized in Creative Writing. In 1987, he received an MA in Writing Seminars at John Hopkins University.
