Karl H. Potter is a professor of philosophy and South Asian Studies at University of Washington, Seattle. He is also General Editor of Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies.
Samkhya, one of India’s oldest philosophical system, is featured in this volume of The Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies. It was co-edited and edited by Gernald J Larson and Ram Shankar Bhattacharya. Karl H. Potter is the general editor. He traces the history of Samkhya from its origins in the third century B.C.E. Through the 20th century. G.J. Larsen wrote the introduction to this volume. Larsen’s introduction discusses the history and philosophical implications of the system. The rest of the volume contains summaries in English for all known Sanskrit texts from the Samkhya system. Many summaries of texts are new to English, and include extensive treatment of the Yuktidipika as well as the Samkhyavrtti, Samkhyasaptativrtti, and the Samkhyasaptativrtti. This volume is intended for cultural historians, philosophers, and students of comparative study in general. The volume also contains a lot of material that has not been published before. This will make it useful for area specialists, Indologists, and Sanskritists.
