Otto Bohtlingk was one the most important, if not the greatest Indologists in the nineteenth century. This was Bohtlingk’s first publication, which appeared in 1839-40 as two volumes. This edition combines the two volumes and contains Panini’s sutras, along with a German translation, notes and Dhatupatha, GAnapatha, and other useful indexes. Even today, the Astadhyayi Panini’s is difficult to follow and was a very challenging text in Bohtlingk’s day. It was a groundbreaking work, and should have been evaluated in this spirit. Renou (1969) stated that Bohtlingk’s edition of Astadhyayi was the most widely used in Europe. It was responsible for what could be described as a “revolution” in linguistic thinking, both in Indo-European and general linguistics. Studying Sanskrit grammar was a stimulant for studying the history of Indoeuropean languages. For the first time ever in the history linguistics, a word could be easily broken down into root, stem-forming suffix, and desinence. Bohtlingk’s text was the first to be considered a standard text. It was used up until new editions that included detailed exegetical explanations were published.
