ALEX WAYMAN is a professor of Sanskrit and is at the forefront of Western Buddhist Scholarship through his series of books on tantric as well as non-tantric Buddhism, which are based upon over thrity year of research. In his articles and books, he uses both Sanskrit as well as Tibetan languages. He is the author of many articles and honorary volumes.
This book is divided into four sections. Part 1 is an introduction that places the Buddhist Tantras in Mahayana Buddhism. It also recalls their early literary history, including the Guhyasamajatantra. Part two focuses on the foundations of Buddhist Tantras. Part three focuses on special studies that are not readily available to the public. These include the nine organs of the body, the Tantric teachings about the inner Zodiac, the female energy and symbolism within the Buddhist Tantras, and the five-fold ritual simbolism of passion. Part Four is the Bibliographical research which includes a correlation between Tanjur and Kanjur.
