”….major Phonetic Treatise belonging to Kauthuma–Ranayaniya Branch of the Samaveda ………an essential contribution to our knowledge about the Samavedic technical literature ……an admirable effort to make the complex and obscure rules of the Puspasutra available to the English-reading public. —–Journal of the American Oriental Society 123.4 (2004)
The Puspasutra, one of the most important ancillary works in Saman technical literature, is attributed to the Ranayaniya and Kauthuma schools. It focuses on the structure and melodies of Saman. In the current context, Puspa refers to the syllabic expansion of a melody that is made out of a verse. The Puspasutra was composed long before the Saman melodies were developed. Professor G.H. has prepared the current edition. Prof. G.H. Tarlekar, a living authority in the science of Samachanting, has prepared the present edition. It contains an accurate Sanskrit text with English exposition. This enables Tarlekar to highlight all the complex points in the Sutras in an extremely technical language. This edition presents the Sama-chanting text in English for the first time.
