A Promised Land
#1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Justin Webb, Mail on Sunday, writes a compelling, funny, compelling, and life-affirming account of Barack Obama’s extraordinary journey from a young man looking for his identity to leader in the free world. He also describes his political education as well as the memorable moments of his first term as president, which was a period of great transformation and turmoil. Obama takes the reader on an engaging journey that spans his early political ambitions to the Iowa caucus win that proved the power of grassroots activism, to the historic night of November 4, 2008 when he became the 44th president of America, the first African American to hold this highest office. He offers unique insights into U.S. politics and international diplomacy, and a thoughtful reflection on his presidency. Obama takes readers into the Oval Office, the White House Situation Room, Moscow, Cairo and Beijing and beyond. As he builds his cabinet and deals with a global financial crisis we are privy his thoughts. We also get to see how he tackles Wall Street reform, confronts generals about U.S. strategies in Afghanistan, and responds to the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon blowout. Finally, we witness the authorisation of Operation Neptune’s Spear which ultimately leads to Osama bin Laden’s death. The story of Osama bin Laden’s gamble with history and the faith of community organizers is deeply personal and intimate in A Promised Land. Obama candidly discusses the challenges of being a Black American candidate for the office, balancing the expectations of a young generation that is buoyed by “hope and progress,” and the moral challenges presented by high-stakes decision making. Obama is open and honest about the obstacles he faced at home and abroad. He also discusses how his time in the White House impacted his family. He never loses sight of the fact that progress is possible within the ongoing, great American experiment. Barack Obama’s conviction in democracy is not something that comes from above, but one built on empathy and mutual understanding. Observer: ‘What’s unexpected in A Promised Land? The former president’s candour.’ David Olusoga.

An Ordinary Life: Portrait of an Indian Generation
The majority of the world is made up of people living simple lives. Because their stories are not being written about, they remain unheard. Their lives are inspiring because they represent certain values that can survive in any society and keep us connected to the invisible forces that govern us. An Ordinary Life is a warm tale by Ashok Lavasa, former Election Commissioner for India. To show how his Bauji’s principles were a moral compass for his life, and they can be for ours, he weaves his father’s experiences into the story of India today. He explores the virtues and ethics of honest living through a series of stories. This demonstrates that one can thrive in a world with rising aspirations and fierce competition, while still maintaining one’s ideals. An Ordinary Life, reflective and philosophical, is infused with the wisdom of an older Indian generation’s way of living, which is both unique and ordinary, and is universal.
