Women and Political Participation (1947-2012)
Women’s empowerment, enhancement of women’s participation in decision-making bodies and their representation in elected legislative bodies. Under a political milieu, which is fastly moving to give impetus to all these questions, India cannot remain without being affected by these fast moving events. Its perennial impacts on Indian political scenario was 73″ and 74 constitutional amendments, whereby one-third seats have been reserved for women in the election of Panchayati Raj institutions and the issue for the reservation of one third seats for women in Lok Sabha and States’ Assemblies has been taken afresh.
However, right from the day, the Bill for amending the day, the Bill for amending the constitution for reservation of one- third seats for women in Lok Sabha and States’ Assemblies, was placed on the table of parliament new controversies have sprung up, as some of the political parties have been demanding definite percentage of quota for OBC, dalit and Muslim women, Notwithstanding that all political parties have inserted this issue as an irreversible part in their election manifestos yet there are some of the political parties which are not ready to accept women as a separate entity. They want a definite percentage of the reserved seats be bifurcated specially nerved for dalit and Muslim women.
