A study of generation gap efforts have been made to examine the phenomenon of generation gap in the college students belonging to backward community. The backward community constitutes a sizeable proportion of the total population of town.

Generation gap denotes the differences between the attitudinal modernity of the parents and their children. A dynamic model in based on the assumption that generation gap is not merely due to lapse of time. It is the factors and expriences which cause the generation gap. The influences of the factors which one experiences during the lapsing time create generation gap. An illeterate son of an illiterate farmer will show no generation gap in attitudes. Similarly a highly educated son of a highly educated father will also show no difference in attitude. Thus merely the age difference between son and father does not work. On the other hand an educated son of an illiterate farmer shows generation gap. Here it is education which is responsible for the creation of generation gap and not merely the lapse of time, that is, age difference between the son and the father. This is an assumption of the present work. The children (both sons and daughters) of Backward parents who are studing in the final year of the colleges have been taken.

In shaping the present volume, GENERATING GAP : COMPARISON OF MODERNITY OF URBAN BACKWARD CASTE COLLEGE STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENS, efforts have been made to examine the phenomenon of generation gap in the college students of Ranchi belonging to Backward community. The Backward Community constitutes a sizable proportion of the total population of Ranchi town. The present work is one of the series of research being conducted in the Post-Graduate Department of Psychology, Ranchi University. The Post-Graduate Department of Psychology has been conducting a series of works in the field of generation gap besides its works in the other fields of social psychology. The present work has been done in other communities of the society also with an aim to verify the generality or universality of the phenomenon of generation gap.
