This volume seems to be the first introduction for English-speaking students to the subject that, according to Indian tradition, corresponds with ‘philosophy’ in British universities and most other English-speaking universities. It demonstrates how Indian philosophers have asked such questions as whether we can be certain we ‘know’ any thing, whether words imply anything, whether it’s possible to generalize from natural regularities and whether there’s anything in nature or’reality’ that corresponds to our notion of a class. This book traces the long-term and thorough analysis of these philosophical problems over many centuries. It also outlines the interrelationships between ideas and’schools’, and the development of formal logic, theory of knowledge and other analytical investigations. It also reveals the closely linked development of science and technology in India. This does not mean that Indian philosophy is identical to Western philosophy, or a part thereof. That would be redundant and boring. It’s interesting because it addresses similar philosophical issues in different ways to philosophers elsewhere. There is the issue of translation. This problem is evident in many books on Indian tradition. This Course is only based on the original Sanskrit and Pali sources, as well as Prakrit translations by the author.
