Kabir is a great figure in indian literary and religious history. He is the medieval counterpart to mahatma Gandhi. His verses are a beacon of secularism, religious tolerance and folk wisdom. Kabir was a lower-caste muslim weaver and opposed superstition, empty ritualism, and bigotry. His writings were written in the language of the common folk-the rough and simple idioms of old hindi. These captured the imagination of so many that his voice was heard across a large area of north india from the punjab through the deccan. Charlotte vaudeville gives the first section of the book a biography of kabir in history and legend, as well as information about his language use. The second part contains excellent modern translations of his verses as well as short selections from verses by his contemporaries. This section is intended to help you understand and appreciate kabir in English.
