Satyajit Ray was the son of a prominent Bengali family from Calcutta in West Bengal. He was born in 1921. He began his career as a commercial artist after being inspired by Jean Renoir, a French filmmaker. In total, he has made 36 movies, beginning with Pather Panchali in 1955. This film won the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Human Documentary award, as well as ten other international awards. This film was part of the Apu Trilogy, along with Apur Sansar & Aparajito. Satyajit Ray was responsible for all publicity materials, credit titles, editing and scoring, as well as scripting.
