Too often, Vedanta is misunderstood when Advaita Vedanta, or more specifically the philosophical system associated to Sankaracarya, is being used. Vedanta literally means “the concluding portions” of the Veda. This is why Indian philosophy uses the term Vedanta to describe those systems that accept such texts as Upanisads and a few other texts such as Brahmasutras (alternatively called the Vedantasutras). Many philosophical systems fall under the Vedanta system classification, including many that are not known to most students. Many of the Vedanta system names are derived from their theories about the relationship between Brahman (revealed in the Upanisads to be the highest principle) and Atman, which is the individual self. Advaita claims these are identical and non-different (abheda); Dvaita asserts they are totally different (bheda). Other Vedantic systems resist these extremes and argue that the relation between Brahman and self is one of identity-in-difference (bhedabheda). There are many other systems, including the Visistadvaita system by Ramanuja and Srivaisnavas. This Volume contains the literature of many other bhedabheda members, including those associated with Srikantha, Bhartr-prapanca and Bhaskara.
