Brahman and Person contains essays by Richard De Smet (1916-1997) on the subject of Indian thought and person. De Smet suggests that the nirguna Brahman may be considered properly personal if understood in the classical and original sense that was developed in the Christian effort of speaking about the mysteries and Incarnation. Instead, the Western Sanskrit translators were influenced by an individualistic view of the person, which led to the rendering of Saguna Brahman and nirguna Brahman personal and impersonal. De Smet, in a series of essays, also addressed the question of human person in Indian thought and Western thought. He proposed that Sankara’s holistic and organic conception of the human being can be found in his writings. This collection of essays from an Indologist is a significant contribution to Indological studies and cross-cultural and interreligious dialog.
