Buddhism in Contemporary Tibet

The People’s Republic of China allowed religious activity to be revived after the Cultural Revolution’s upheavals. The 1978 decisions allowed Tibetans, whose traditional religious and cultural institutions were destroyed over the past two decades to start a Buddhist revival that is among the most dramatic and extensive examples of religious revitalization in modern China. This book focuses on the nature of this revival. These authors examine the complex ways Tibetan Buddhists have restructured their religion through a complicated process of economic, political, and social adaptation. These essays not only show the vibrancy of Tibetan Buddhism in modern Tibet, but also discuss the challenges that religion and Tibetan culture face in an increasingly complex world.
