This volume is the second in a series dedicated to Buddhist philosophy. It picks up where volume VII, the previous encyclopedia volume, left off at the beginning of second century A.D. It is still a mystery period, and there are many scholarly differences about the history and thought of this period. The volume’s editor has attempted to use the most current scholarship available. The volume treats the subject altogether chronologically, beginning with the Buddha and ending when Buddhist thought leaves India around 14th century A.D. This approach is meant to avoid creating more divisions in Buddhism than were historically obvious. These volumes are limited to summaries that contain the entire text. They should be philosophically interesting throughout. They should also be polemical, expository or theoretical in nature. These criteria are interpreted loosely and broadly here. These volumes deal with Buddhism. The original Sutras are the earliest literature that is regularly attributed to the Buddha and his immediate disciples. They are not summarized. This encyclopedia is intended to give a consistent account of Indian philosophical thought. Experts will be cited for points that are not clear.
