This is the third volume in the Encyclopedia that deals with Buddhist philosophy. It takes the reader to the middle of the sixth. Many of the texts and authors discussed here are not familiar to casual Buddhist students. Dignaga is the most significant author. He is responsible almost exclusively for transforming Indian Buddhism towards an exhaustive analysis epistemic considerations, and in particular inferential reasoning. Other authors whose works are listed here should be more well known, especially the Yogacara commentators Buddhapalita (rival) and Bhavya (legendary), who introduces for first time into Buddhism the contrast between his brand of Buddhism and any other system in contemporary India, and not just the Buddhists.
