The Mahapuranas are a continuation of Hindu mythology’s accepted tradition. The anthology includes fresh translations of these myths. Only a few have been made available in English before. This provides a rich new section of Hindu mythology. The book is divided into six chapters. “Origins” includes myths about creation, time and space. “Seers Kings and Supernaturals” tells stories of rivers, trees and animals. It also includes tales about heroes and sages. Three chapters deal with myths concerning the chief gods: Krsna and Visnu. The chapter The Goddess tells stories about the lovers and wives of the gods as well as Kali, the fierce battle goddess. The editors offer a historical context in which to discuss Hindu mythology and provide detailed analysis of its sources. Many names have been given to the original. These names are easily accessible thanks to the editors’ extensive glossary.
