Gangesa Upadhyaya, a great Indian logician of the fourteenth century, left us the Tattvacintamani (or Jewel of Reflection upon the Truth) as the only composition. Gangesa established the “New” phase (navya), of the long-running school for epistemology, metaphysics and astrophysics in India known as Nyaya. This translation is of the perception chapter (Pratyaksa–khanda) from this important text. An introduction has been provided by the authors that provides historical and theoretical background as well as a comparison between Nyaya and Western epistemological traditions. A detailed running commentary provides additional context, analysis, and comparison. A glossary explains in English all Sanskrit words, provides brief descriptions of people and schools, and includes a detailed Index.
