This book attempts to reconstruct the foundations and philosophy of Indian philosophy as they are revealed in early Indian texts dating between 13th and six B.C.E. These texts are Sanskrit religious texts that were passed orally to Brahmin families. These texts are the intellectual foundation of Indian culture, called Sruti (literally, “what has been heard”). They are commonly called Veda, which is Latin for ‘knowledge’. Three layers of Vedic tradition provide the basis for this book’s analysis. The Veda’s of Rk-stanzas, Samveda and Yajus-formulas are the first four Vedas. These three layers of ancient Indian tradition are the subject of the title of this book. The central metaphysical concept in Rgvedic thought is fire, and it will remain so until the Brahmanas. The title’s second half refers to an additional goal: to present an overview of ancient Indian thought.
