This study examines the Nyaya Philosophy as it was presented by Gautama. It is explained by Vatsyayana, Uddyotakara. The author also examines the empirical foundations of its theory and proves the validity of the conclusions. Analysing the Nyaya theory reveals that it does not justify the nature, career, and destiny of the self (atman). The conceptual framework is based on the questionable assumption, that the experience of an expert (apta), is not only incorrigible, but that his communication of it is authentic. It is only possible to understand the framework within its social context. The author asserts that Indian philosophical and religious thought cannot be understood in isolation. This study challenges the traditional presentation of Indian cultural heritage. It also provides a framework for future research and reappraisal.
