Book Summary of Hindu Spirituality (Vol. 1):Vedas Through Vedanta. In this study, a social and culture anthropologist and specialist in the study religion combine their skills to analyze recent changes in Sri Lankan popular religion. According to the Sinhalas, Buddhism has shared the religious space with a spirit religion since its inception. The spirit of religion is concerned with worldly welfare, while Buddhism is about salvation. Buddhism Transformed examines and describes the profound changes in the Sinhala religion’s character in both these areas. This book is the first to document systematically the cultural effects of the decline in the lives of the “other half” in Sri Lanka. Although health care improved and literacy was universalized after Sri Lankan independence in 1948 (which also marked the beginning of modern Sri Lankan history), the economy could not keep up with the growing expectations of an ever-growing population. The village community was increasingly isolated and became less mobile as a result. New stresses in Sri Lankan society have created new psychological needs. This has led to changes in Protestant Buddhism, which was formed under Protestant influence following the British conquest. Spirit cults are characterized by less morally scrupulous gods and people who value altered states and consciousness. The authors conclude that the unusual developments in Sri Lanka may not be new in India’s religious history.
