This work examines the evolution of philosophical thought during the Vedic and post Vedic periods that preceded the rise of Jainism or Buddhism. On the basis of the Rgveda and Atharvaveda as well as the Aranyakas, the older Upanisads, and allied literature, the author has traced the evolution of early Indian philosophy. Each chapter is broken into its own section. The work is divided in four parts. Part I is about Vedic philosophy, Part II about post-Vedic Philosophy; Part III about the philosophy of the transitional period prior to Mahavira and Buddha; and Part IV with Mahavira’s philosophy. In defiance of many scholiasts, the author has used the original Indian sources to prove that early Indian thought evolution was both systematic and scientific. This work sheds light on a period of Indian thought that is very important and obscure. It can also be used to help understand the background of Buddhistic philosophical thought.
