Michael Oren FitzgeraldHis Holiness, the 68th Jagadguru Kanchi, died in 1994 at the young age of 100. He was one the most revered and beloved spiritual figures of the 20th century. His spiritual legacy is presented in this book, which has the distinction of being an indispensable introduction to Hinduism today. His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Chandra–sekharendra Swamigal was ordained at the tender age 13 as the Pontiff in Kanchi for the hallowed line back to Adi Sankara. Thus, more than 87 years of Adi Sankara’s life were dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of traditional Hindu dharma. The discourses in this book include prayer and virtue, explanations of Hindu metaphysical Truth, and an analysis of the conflict between modernity and traditional Hindu Dharma and traditional Hindu dharma and traditional Hindu dharma and modernity. This text was compiled from many of the discourses that he had recorded. They were then transcribed and translated into English. Many times, the Jagadguru’s Tamil definitions of Sanskrit terms were translated into English. These definitions were retained; however, new definitions were added to the text to aid comprehension without constant reference to a glossary.
