Although Jainism’s philosophy is the subject of much literature, a lot of it consists merely of summary reviews that don’t accurately reflect the uniqueness and originality of Jain thought. Anekantavada is the core thesis of Jain philosophy. This rendering fails to capture the unique contribution of Jain philosophy. It is simply that every serious account about the world contains elements that are truthful. However, any linguistic expression cannot comprehend all of those perspectives or viewpoints. Not because they are false but because the truth can’t be consistently expressed in natural languages. Any such expression must contain contradictions. It is difficult to assess any philosophical thesis made by Jain. Should we take them as truth-claims or just as some of a multitude of incompatible ways of seeing the world? How can a Jain saint gain knowledge if the former? Can he comprehend collectively all the true theories? What happens to the truths that are presumed to be in every of the incompatible viewpoints? These questions are explored and answered by the works in this volume.
