This book expands on current discussions of’mysticism and religious experience’ by examining the content and process of’religious knowledge’ in classical Advaita and modern Advaita. The work of William Alston, and Alvin Plantinga are used. Thomas Forsthoefel analyzes Advaita’s main streams, with particular attention to the contexts and scopes of epistemic merit in religious experiences. Forsthoefel uniquely employs specific analytical categories of contemporary Westernepistemologies as heuristics to examine the cognitive dimension of religious experience in Indian Vedanta. This book is a valuable contribution to both contemporary and modern Indian philosophy. It demonstrates the nuances in the analysis and interpretation of religious experience in Shankara’s thought and Padmapada’s immediate disciples (Suresvara, Padmapada), as well the teachings of Ramana Maharshi. Using comparative philosophy forsthoefel and exegesis, this book argues for a carefully justification of claims after eligious experiences, even if these claims involve, like in the Advaita a paradoxical knowing beyond knowledge’.
