The Mahabharata, an Indian epic is the most extensive ever written in Sanskrit. It tells the story of a dynastic battle that provides a background social, moral, and cosmological to the climatic war. This English translation is based on Pratap Chandra Roy’s translation of the Sanskrit version. It was published at the beginning of this century. William Buck has simplified the story. Buck has condensed the story from his old translation, which is 5800 pages long. His own book, however, is only a tenth as long. Buck’s version reflects the Sanskrit epic sequence and uses traditional techniques such as flashbacks and stories within stories. He also uses moral lessons that are placed in the mouths principal characters. There are many English translations of the Mahabharata. Some shorter than others. William Buck’s version is the best, but none of them have managed to capture the mixture of religion and martial spirit that pervades this epic. It shows how even the most grandiose and impressive human efforts can seem to be insignificant when viewed from the perspective of eternity. In the Beginning, The Ring and the Well of Jewels and Gems. Indraprastha and Damayanti. Part II: In the middle, 6:00 Nala and 7:00 Naveeni. Part III: In the End: The Blade of Grass. Notes.
