“Mahamurda: The Moonlight has been a great help to many serious Dharma students. It is wonderful that the second edition of The Moonlight is being published. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama has written the foreword. I am delighted that this text will be published in English. This text will be greatly beneficial to English-speaking students of Buddhism. This text has been used by me in my teaching and it communicates the mahamudra teachings of the Practice Lineage clearly and concisely. –Chogyam Trungpa. We now have a treasure, a vast and deep work of unimaginable value, thanks to the talents of one of Tibet’s most skilled living translators. Its size, depth and scholarly presentation might make meditation seem like a simple, enjoyable, beneficial pastime to some readers. A copy should be kept for those who are committed to correct meditation practice. It will be a valuable guide for their entire lives. I am delighted that this text will be published in English. This guide, which was written in 16 century by an outstanding lama from the Kagyu School, is still used widely today as a manual. It is divided into two sections. The first section outlines the common approach, followed by the mahamudra approach to tranquility and insight (vipasyana), meditation. Mahamudra, a Tibetan Buddhist major presentation on the theory and practice meditation, is the first English translation. It includes detailed instructions about the stages and techniques for training advanced students. Takpo Tashi Naygyal (1512-1587), a great Tibetan lama and scholar of Tibetan Buddhism’s kagyu sect, wrote the original Tibetan text that consists of almost 800 pages. His text is so extensive and comprehensive that it is still used by Tibetan meditation masters to instruct their students.
