Swami Vishnudevananda was born in Kerala, South India, in 1927. He entered the Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, in the Himalayas, as a young man. He lived and worked at the Divine Life Society for twelve years, under the supervision of Swami Sivananda, his master. He was able to develop his extraordinary talents in Hatha Yoga. He was the first professor of Hatha Yoga at Sivananda Yoga Vedanta forest academy in Rishikesh. He also continued his practice and learned many advanced Hatha Yoga techniques, including mudras and bandhas, pranayama and mudras. Swamiji answered the question, “My Master touched me and opened mine intuitive eye.” All of this knowledge was passed to me in past lives. His guru sent Swami Vishnudevananda to the West in 1957 with the words, “People are waiting”. He became a world-renowned expert in Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Swamiji established the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Val Morin (Quebec, Canada), and other centres and ashrams around the world. Swami Vishnudevananda was an unwavering advocate for peace in the world. He flew his own plane around the world to help the troubled areas, earning him the Flying Swami nickname. His intense Hatha Yoga practice was the reason he had unfailing energy. Swami Vishnudevananda, author of The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras, is also the inspiration behind The Sivananda Companion to Yoga, Yoga, Mind and Body, The Sivananda Companion to Meditation, The Yoga Cookbook, and many other books. Swami Vishnudevananda entered mahasamadhi on November 9, 1993. His body was taken to Ganga (the Ganges), Uttarkashi, Himalayas. Here Swamiji spent a lot of his early years doing intense sadhana. Through the Inter national Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, Swami Vishnudevananda’s teachings and work continue.
