Hans T. Bakker is the Gonda Chair of Hinduism in Sanskrit Traditions and Indian Philosophy at the University of Groningen.
These papers are the result of the Purana panel at the 12th World Sanskrit Conference held in Helsinki in July 2003. They were intended to examine deviations from the original Purana text. They are mainly focused on Skandapurana, which is a good starting point for a study of both the growth and origins of the Purana texts as well as the religious developments they reflect. Each article in this book serves a purpose, but each can be read by itself. Bakker’s first contribution can be considered a sort of introduction to the subject. The second section deals with a section in the text where the distinction into recension is not very important. Torzsok’s and Harimoto’s contributions focus on the transmission and development of the Purana into various recensions.
