G.W.F. G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831), is one of the greatest figures in Western thought’s history and the most influential philosopher of his time.
Hegel’s most grand experiment is Phenomenology in Spirit. It changes the way we see the world and alters the nature of the philosophical enterprise. He says, “This book shows how knowledge emerges… It explains how spirit can become pure knowledge or absolute spirit. Hegel considered it a necessary prelude to his philosophical system. Its task was to go through in scientifically purified order the stages of the mind’s progress from immediate sense-consciousness into scientific philosophy. It is not surprising that Hegel wanted to call this work Science of the Experience of Consciousness. Phenomenology’s sequence of phases is therefore a delicate blend of the contingently historic and the logically required. The successive phases reveal what was logically implicit during its earlier phases. They also reveal a number of implications that are actually contained in past history as well as Hegel’s thought history.
