This volume focuses on the philosophies and systems of Purva Mimamsa. It is one of two Mimamsa schools that have been traditionally considered systems for Hindu philosophical thought. Classically, the term “Mimamsa” means an “exploration” or investigation of something. It can be used to refer to a theory that governs the origins, basic values and assumptions of man. This includes the types of actions that a person should and should not take, as described in the Vedas. The Vedas, which are the oldest known literature in Hinduism, produced a large literature. Some of this was passed to us as short pronouncements known as sutras. These were probably meant for memorization, and not always intelligible independently. These sutras generated explanatory comments and commentaries upon commentsaries. The Purva Mimamsa’s basic sutras were called the Mimamsasutras or Purvamimamsasutras. (‘Purva’ because another set of literature expressing a different understanding about ultimate things was also recognized as Mimamsa. The Purva Mimamsa did not initially recognize the subject matter of philosophy as it was understood in these Encyclopedia volumes. This meant that they would not be able to treat the Indian philosophy in other systems. Purva Mimamsa developed a system of philosophical thought in response. It began with commentaries on the sutras and then moved on to separate works which comprise the Philosophy being studied in this Volume.
