Hermann Oldenberg (1854-1920), is regarded as one of Germany’s greatest Indologists. He was University Professor in Kiel and Berlin. He translated the Dipavamsa Rgveda, Grhyasutras and Dipavamsa into German. Prof. V.G. Paranjape (1887-1976), received his D. Litt. In 1920, Paranjape received his D. Litt. degree from Paris. From 1915 to 1946, he taught sanskrit at Pune’s Fergusson College. He also translated into Marathi J. Books La formation de la Langue Marathe, and into English (in four volumes).M.A. Mehendale received his Ph.D. degree in 1943 from the University of Bobbay. He was a professor of sanskrit at Deccan College Research Institute Pune 1951-1978, and Joint gernral editor of Dictionary of sanskrit onHistorical Principles 1973-1983.
Oldenberg distinguished between the Rigveda’s original text, the form in which the Rsis composed their hymns, and the traditional text that has been passed down to us through oral tradition. Oldenberg conducted a detailed analysis of every aspect of the traditional text to present the original text to scholars in the format and arrangement he discovered. Oldenberg intended the materials in this volume to be a Preface for his Rigveda edition.
